Mineral vs. Vegetable Tanning: How Your Leathers Are Made

Before becoming a bag, belt, or case, a hide must be tanned. This step transforms raw—perishable—skin into leather, a stable and workable material. There are two main families of tanning, and they yield radically different leathers.

Mineral Tanning (Chromium)

Mineral tanning uses chromium salts. It is the most widespread process in the industry for a simple reason: it is fast, taking only a few days, whereas vegetable tanning takes weeks.

Its qualities: leather that is supple right out of the tannery, water-resistant, and accepts a wide range of vibrant and stable colors. It is also an economical process, which explains its market dominance.

Its limitation: mineral leather develops almost no patina. It remains visually stable over time, which can be seen as an advantage or disadvantage depending on what one is looking for. It also has a more uniform, more "industrial" appearance, and the process raises environmental concerns related to the use of chromium.

Vegetable Tanning

Vegetable tanning uses natural tannins extracted from tree barks—oak, chestnut, mimosa, depending on the tannery. It is the oldest known tanning process, and also the slowest: several weeks, sometimes several months.

Its qualities: a living leather that patinates over time—its shade warms and deepens with use. It is a more environmentally friendly process, and each piece evolves uniquely depending on how it is worn and exposed. This leather best embodies the idea of an object that ages with its owner.

Its limitation: it is more sensitive to water and stains, especially in its first few months, and requires a little more attention. The longer production time also impacts the price.

And in terms of lifespan?

This is often where vegetable tanning takes the lead. Well-maintained, vegetable-tanned leather can easily last 15 to 20 years, or even much longer—its dense fibrous structure and its ability to regenerate with care (milk, nourishing cream) make it a material designed to last over time, improving rather than deteriorating.

Chrome-tanned leather generally has a shorter lifespan, around 5 to 10 years depending on use. It ages less well: without a patina to mask wear, the marks of time tend to appear as defects rather than an enrichment of the material.
